The Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority, popularly known by its acronym UPEIDA was set up under U.P Industrial Area Development Act, 1976. UPEIDA acts as a Nodal Agency for implementation of Expressway projects in the State entrusted by GoUP. Presently, GoUP has entrusted UPEIDA to implement two Greenfield Access Controlled Expressway projects in Engineering Procurement & Construction (EPC) mode.
Agra-Lucknow Expressway
This Greenfield Expressway project is 302.22 km long, starting from Agra and passing through Firozabad, Mainpuri, Etawah, Auraiya, Kannauj, Kanpur Nagar, Unnao, Hardoi and ending at Lucknow districts. The expected travel time from Agra to Lucknow shall be reduced to 4 hours. The width of the Expressway will be 6 lanes (expandable up to 8 lanes with all lanes structured as 8 lanes) with a design speed of 120 km per hour. Inauguration of this expressway was done on 21.11.2016, and at present this expressway is operational.
Purvanchal Expressway
This Greenfield Expressway project is 340.824 KM long, starting from Lucknow and passing through the districts of Barabanki, Ayodhya. Amethi, Sultanpur, Ambedkarnagar, Azamgarh, Mau, and ends at Ghazipur. Purvanchal Expressway 6 lane (expandable to 8 lane with all structures as 8 lane) Access Controlled expressway project with design speed of 120 km/h. An opening of the main Carriageway is proposed by March 2021.
Bundelkhand Expressway
This Greenfield Expressway project is 296.07 KM long, starts from Chitrakoot passes through districts Banda, Mahoba, Hamirpur, Jalaun, Auraiya and ends at Agra-Lucknow Expressway in district Etawah. Bundelkhand Expressway is 4 lane (expandable to 6 lane with all structures as 6 lane) Access Controlled expressway project with design speed of 120 km/h. This Expressway is under construction and expected to be operational at the end of year 2022.
Gorakhpur Link Expressway
The Greenfield Expressway project of 91.352 KM length is starting from Gorakhpur, is passing through the districts of Ambedkarnagar, Sant Kabirnagar and is ending at the Purvanchal Expressway in district Azamgarh. The Gorakhpur Link Expressway is a 4-lane (expandable to 6 lane with all structures as 6 lane) Access Controlled expressway project with a design speed of 120 km/h. This Expressway is currently under construction and is expected to be operational by the year 2023.
-Apart from the aforesaid Expressway projects, UPEIDA is planning to develop a 594.00 Km long Ganga Expressway from Meerut to Prayagraj. The Ganga Expressway will be passing through the districts of Ghaziyabad, Hapur, Amroha, Sambhal, Badaun, Shajhapur, Hardoi, Unnao, Rai Bareily, and Pratapgarh.
All the Expressways provide for interchanges, underpasses for cross roads, pedestrians, and animals, green belt as per IRC: SP: 21-2009 specifications besides the service road. In addition to these, facilities for rest areas, fuel stations, service stations and restaurants provision has also been made etc.
The manifest benefits of these Expressways projects implementation in Uttar Pradesh shall be as follows, Accelerated Convenient transportation, sizeable savings in fuel and better pollution control, social and economic development of the areas covered under the Projects, encouragement to agriculture, commerce, tourism & industrial development, accelerated business facilities among important cities.
Besides these, the Expressway projects will be instrumental in the rapid development of the Handloom, Food Processing, Cold storages, Warehousing and Milk based sectors, also creating a plethora of opportunities for new Industrial Training Institutes, Educational Institutes, Medical Institutes and increasing the possibilities of establishment of New Satellite/Smart Cities.
Defence Corridor
The UPDIC is a 6-node project that includes Lucknow, Kanpur, Jhansi, Agra, Aligarh, and Chitrakoot, and covers the Central, East, and West regions of Uttar Pradesh. Besides these nodes, the corridor also extends along the Golden Quadrilateral connecting Delhi – Kolkata and is supported by networks of expressways as follows:
